Bonjour,
Remarques et nouvelles questions à propos d'une autre question posée le 8/10/2015 intitulée : "Gravure en couverture de la chronique lyonnaise"
Vous indiquiez que la page de titre de "La chronique lyonnaise de Jean Gueraud" 1924 était une reprise d'une gravure illustrant "Dames de Renom" de Boccace en 1551, attribuée à Pierre de Vase, dit Pierre Eskrich (vers 1530-après 1590).
On peut remarquer que cette gravure est à nouveau utilisée en 1555 par le même éditeur Guillaume Rouille pour "Les Amoureuses de Guillaume de la Tayssoniere".
Il s'agit de 2 ouvrages consacrés aux femmes.
Doit on voir dans cette gravure une allégorie symbolisant la femme? Ou bien une allusion libertine sous-jacente?
Le pied de la gravure est illustré de 2 têtes de lion goguenards.
Une tête de lion, presque identique décore le cartouche de la planche 25 du plan scénographique de Lyon.
Gérard Bruyère attribue ce cartouche à Georges Reverdy et signale la même tête de lion illustrant un libelle politique de Gabriel Syméoni de 1559, visible dans l'ouvrage de Toussaint Renucci : "Un Aventurier des Lettres au XVIe siècle : Gabriel Symeoni, Florentin, 1509-1570, Paris, Didier, 1943".
Connaissez vous d'autres gravures où apparaît ce lion?
La reprise de cette figure de lion pendant au moins 10 ans indique t elle un phénomène de mode ou la production d'un même atelier?
Quel symbolique attribuer à cette tête de lion?

Bonjour,
Votre question demande de nombreuses recherches. La lecture des frontispices est un exercice difficile. En effet, la symbolique joue sur un ensemble de références croisées, liées à des mythes chrétiens et antiques, à leur illustration à la Renaissance, à des emblèmes, et à des devises. Repérer l'ensemble de cette intertextualité est complexe et nécessite de mobiliser de nombreuses connaissances et de nombreux outils. Aussi, ne serons-nous pas en mesure de répondre en 72h de façon complète à votre question.
A propos des frontispices et de leur relation au texte auxquels ils sont liés, plusieurs remarques préliminaires s'imposent.
(1) Lyon est une des villes les plus florissantes dans le domaine des emblèmes et des devises. La littérature sur le sujet est en effet extrêmement riche. Cette page d'une exposition virtuelle consacrée à Simeoni et son rôle dans les emblème vous en donnera une idée.
(2) Souvent, si un frontispice est gravé à la demande d'un imprimeur ou d'un libraire (comprendre un éditeur) pour "illustrer", ou plutôt "entrer en résonance" avec un livre particulier, le même frontispice, le même bois, peut-être réutilisé sur d'autres titres sans que le lien soit aussi clair et évident. Cette réutilisation peut être liée
- au fait que le second texte a un thème général proche de ce que "dit" l'image ;
- à la volonté de mettre en relation ce second texte avec le texte qui voit la première utilisation de l'image en question ;
- à un opportunisme pragmatique (bon format par exemple, disponibilité du bois) ;
- à des considérations purement esthétiques ;
- au fait qu'une partie de l'image fait clin d'oeil ou entre en résonance avec le second texte sans que l'ensemble de l'image ne le soit.
(3) L'utilisation d'une image aussi construite et symbolique qu'un frontispice figuratif peut aussi changer de sens selon le texte auquel elle se rapporte. L'image est potentiellement polysémique.
(4) Les bois circulent entre imprimeurs, parfois sont copiés, et parfois font l'objet de modes.
Aussi est-il délicat d'être catégorique dans les raisons de la réutilisation d'un bois pour le frontispice de différents ouvrages, ou d'associer un seul sens à un frontispice. Cela en tous les cas, demande des recherches un peu poussées, car il faut d’abord repérer et identifier l’ensemble des symboles et personnages du frontispices et ensuite repérer les autres occurrences du frontispice afin de voir à quels textes cette image a été associée.
Remarquons sur ce point que le frontispice est déjà réutilisé pour Les facétieuses nuits de Staparole en 1560 dont le thème est moins les femmes ou le libertinage que la farce ou le jeu.
Concernant le lion, je ne saurai vous citer ainsi d'autres ouvrages, mais je ne serais pas étonné qu’il en existe beaucoup, notamment chez les imprimeurs lyonnais. En effet, la présence du lion, vers le bas du frontispice de Guillaume Rouillé, c'est-à-dire encadrant le cartouche de son adresse (« A lyon, chez Guillaume Roville ») ou dans un cartouche sur le plan scénographique de Lyon ne doit pas surprendre. Par un jeu d’homonymie faussement évident, le lion est associé à la ville et à son blason depuis au moins le XIe siècle. A la Renaissance et dans les emblèmes, le lion est souvent synonyme de force et de puissance. Il n’est en revanche pas couronné, cette interprétation du roi des animaux ne venant que plus tard, au XVIIe siècle.

Ce complément de réponse s’attachera tout d’abord à vous apporter des éléments concernant la deuxième partie de votre question : la tête de lion, ou musequin, est un ornement emprunté au vocabulaire de l’architecture et des arts décoratifs. Particulièrement prisé à la Renaissance, il appartient cependant à une tradition remontant à l’Antiquité comme en atteste ce sarcophage du IIIe siècle après J.C. conservé au Musée du Louvre :

Le recensement des occurrences du lion souriant employé comme mascaron dans la gravure outrepasserait le temps de recherche que nous sommes en mesure de consacrer au Guichet mais nous pouvons, sans hésitation aucune, affirmer que les deux exemples que vous mentionnez ne sont que la reprise d’un motif très répandu. Le « sourire » du lion ne constitue pas une caractéristique assez originale pour corroborer une production par un même atelier, hypothèse d’ailleurs contredite par le style bien distinct des deux œuvres. De fait, vous trouverez ci-dessous quelques exemples démontrant que la gueule ouverte est un poncif fort ancien de la représentation léonine :

Plus probant peut-être car formellement et chronologiquement plus proche, un lion gravé rencontré dans les collections de la Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon semble d’ailleurs tout aussi narquois que les lions « goguenards » qui vous occupent. Ils n’ont pourtant rien d’autre en commun que cette expression similaire :

Pour en revenir à votre question première et à la signification du titre gravé employé à plusieurs reprises par Guillaume Rouillé puis Marius Audin, nous ne pouvons que confirmer la complexité évoquée précédemment. Outre le fait que l’interprétation soit toujours sujette à caution, la polysémie qui est de règle dans ce genre rend illusoire la quête d’assertions. De fait, certaines figures employées sont faussement limpides : le registre inférieur accueille Pan et Cupidon tandis que la partie supérieure révèle une allégorie de l’Ouïe dans les nuées. Si l’identification de ces personnages est assez simple, le sens qu’ils étaient censés revêtir au milieu du XVIe siècle, dans une société goûtant les jeux savants et dans un parfait syncrétisme de références chrétiennes et païennes, reste quant à lui mystérieux. Et ce, d’autant plus que la disposition des figures peut elle-même être investie de sens : le regard échangé entre l’allégorie de droite et la femme au luth est-il signifiant ? Dans le même ordre d’idée, les deux figures latérales fonctionnent-elles en paire ? Il est légitime de le penser et ce pourrait être un indice supplémentaire pour élucider une identité qui malheureusement nous échappe. La figure au sceptre, à droite, porte un attribut trop fréquent pour être parlant et la femme aux torches multiplie les symboles : le flambeau renversé évoque la nuit ou la fin des plaisirs de la vie. Porteur de flamme, il traduit un espoir de résurrection. Mais que peut bien vouloir dire leur association en forme de croix ? Ainsi, nous ne saurions avancer une lecture homogène de cet encadrement gravé, encore moins appuyer une éventuelle allusion féminine ou libertine. Tout au plus pouvons-nous, pour notre part, percevoir effectivement l’évocation d’une thématique amoureuse dans la présence de Cupidon et de Pan.
Nous n'apportons pas là de réponse définitive qui conduirait à décourager les recherches. A défaut d'éclairage suffisant, il faut certes éviter de plaquer un sens monolithique sur une telle composition. Mais notre investigation infructueuse ne doit pas non plus faire conclure à une absence de signification telle que celle que vous proposez.
