Il est communememt admis que la gravure a partir d un tableau, en change le sens de lecture de gauche a droite
Est-il possible dans le cas d'estampes du 17 eme siecle que le sens de lecture ne soit pas change ? par des procedes speciaux ?
Connait-on des exemples dans l'estampe du 17eme siecle?
Dans le cas d un tableau dit d'apres gravure, lorsque le tableau dit original a disparu, est-il toujours une copie d'apres gravure, ne peut il pas etre copie du tableau original sans inversion?

L’art que vous évoquez, celui de la « gravure à partir d’un tableau », est désigné par le terme degravure de reproduction . Ce domaine de l’estampe a souffert d’une systématique dépréciation à partir de la fin du XIXe siècle, moment où il a été opposé au concept naissant de gravure originale. Lorsque l’on considère le fait que l’estampe elle-même, dans la hiérarchie traditionnelle des arts, est largement inférieure à la peinture, que l’on songe au rang du graveur inscrivant dans le bois ou le métal non pas ses propres compositions mais le génie d’un autre !
« C’est un tâcheron, un besogneux, à la rigueur un artisan, sûrement pas un artiste. Il est même à la limite de l’industrie. » (1)
Aujourd’hui, nous tendons à revaloriser cette pratique : non seulement l’historiographie s’attache à mieux connaître les œuvres qu’elle a produites et à faire la lumière sur des artistes tombés dans l’oubli alors que leur notoriété était réelle, mais elle admet également que le mépris dans lequel on la tenait est anachronique. En vertu de cette reconsidération, et pour rendre ce qui est dû à l’inventivité du graveur lorsque ce dernier n’exécute par une copie servile, on parle volontiers degravure d’interprétation .
De fait, ces estampes reproduisant des tableaux ont très souvent un sens de lecture inversé par rapport à l’original. La raison en est évidente : il est plus aisé de copier directement ce que l’on voit plutôt que de faire l’effort d’inverser le dessin. La matrice étant orientée de la même manière que le tableau, l’impression qui en résulte est nécessairement inversée par rapport à l’original. Le schéma ci-dessous permet de visualiser ce phénomène.
C’est ainsi que cette estampe de Guillaume Chasteau exécutée d’après un tableau de Nicolas Poussin est inversée par rapport à l’œuvre originale qu’elle reproduit :

Il est tout à fait possible néanmoins de rencontrer des estampes qui respectent le sens de lecture des œuvres originales. La gravure ci-dessous, réalisée par Diana Scultori d’après Raphaël, en est un bon exemple :

Vous vous demandiez si le sens de lecture d’une gravure de reproduction datant du XVIIe siècle pouvait ne pas être inversé par rapport au tableau ayant servi de modèle. Nous vous répondions plus haut par la positive, avec une estampe du XVIe siècle comme exemple. Le travail d’un graveur du XVIIe siècle, Etienne Baudet, en apportera la preuve définitive avec cette œuvre d’après Nicolas Poussin :

Il est d’ailleurs à noter que tous les paysages d’Etienne Baudet d’après Nicolas Poussin actuellement visibles dans Numelyo, notre bibliothèque numérique, ont le même sens de lecture que les originaux dont ils sont inspirés. Si l’inversion est fréquente et peut paraître naturelle, nous voyons ainsi qu’elle est loin d’être systématique.

Abordons à présent la question des procédés qui rendent possible la reproduction d’un tableau par l’intermédiaire de la gravure.
Avant même d’étudier les diverses raisons d’une inversion ou non du sens de lecture, il est une chose à prendre en considération : la copie n’est généralement pas réalisée directement sur la matrice. Au contraire, le dessin constitue une étape intermédiaire faisant figure de passage obligé. Grâce à lui, la difficulté est fractionnée : avant de s’attaquer aux problèmes de la gravure proprement dite liés à l’incision du cuivre, il permet de résoudre au préalable la question de la mise à l’échelle (la copie gravée étant bien souvent une réduction de l’original). Le dessin présente en outre l’avantage de traduire en un langage monochrome les différentes valeurs d’un original en couleurs, ce qui facilite par la suite la tâche du graveur. Ce travail est si crucial qu’il fait parfois l’objet d’une spécialisation et peut être confié à une tierce personne : c’est ainsi qu’entre le peintre du modèle et le graveur, intervient parfois un dessinateur. Ces trois artistes jouant un rôle dans l’élaboration de l’estampe de reproduction sont respectivement désignés dans la lettre, au sein même de l’œuvre, par les termes « pinxit » (a peint), « sculpsit » (a gravé) et « delineavit » (a dessiné).
Pour finir, et sans prétendre à l’exhaustivité, nous pouvons avancer plusieurs hypothèses expliquant le fait qu’une copie gravée ait le même sens de lecture que le tableau qu’elle reproduit :
1. Le graveur n’a pas travaillé d’après l’œuvre originale mais d’après une estampe de reproduction qui était inversée par rapport au tableau. Il s’agit donc de la copie inversée (on parle degravure en contre-partie ) d’une copie elle-même inversée. Soit, une copie dans le sens de l’original !
2. Le graveur a bel et bien travaillé d’après le tableau original mais en l’observant dans un miroir ; de cette manière il en fait une copie dessinée qui est inversée. Ce dessin, une fois imprimé, retrouve donc le même sens de lecture que le modèle.
3. La technique d’estampe utilisée implique un report du dessin sur la plaque (par la technique duvernis mou ou par piquage ). Il est alors possible, selon qu’on place la copie dessinée sur l’endroit ou sur l’envers, d’inverser ou non le sens de lecture, à loisir. Ces deux procédés sont détaillés dans l’ouvrage anglais que nous évoquions plus haut :
