Anthony de Mello est né à Bombay en 1931. Entré dans la Compagnie de Jésus, il a étudié la philosophie à Barcelone, la théologie à Poona, la psychologie à Chicago, la spiritualité à Rome. Il a dirigé l’institut Sadhana à Lonavla en Inde.
Il est connu comme directeur de retraites et conseiller spirituel. Il a écrit plusieurs livres dont Un chemin vers Dieu : Sadhana dans lequel il cherche à aider les gens à prier, mêlant la tradition chrétienne (saint Benoît, saint Ignace de Loyola, sainte Thérèse) et les techniques orientales de recueillement.
Il est mort subitement à New York le 2 juin 1987 au moment où il dirigeait un groupe de prière à l’Université Fordham, l’université jésuite de New York.
Dans L'esprit d'Anthony De Mello : exercices de méditation, l’auteur de l’ouvrage, le jésuite John Callanan précise :« les détails biographiques sur sa vie ne sont pas nombreux mais lui-même disait que son inspiration lui venait des expériences de sa prime enfance en Inde, où il fut exposé à l’hindouisme et au bouddhisme en même temps qu’au christianisme. Jeune jésuite, (…) il fut alors fortement inspiré par certains mystiques chrétiens dont Thérèse d’Avila et Jean de la Croix (…). Dans les ateliers et les retraites qu’il dirigeait, le mélange savant des spiritualités occidentale et orientale combiné à une profonde connaissance de la dimension psychologique de la nature humaine suscita un enseignement très riche ».
La revue Archivum historicum societatis Iesu, qui recense les travaux de recherche sur les jésuites, ne mentionne pas d’articles sur Anthony de Mello dans la période 1987-1997.

Le Diccionario histórico de la Compañía de Jesús : biográfico-temático de Charles E. O'Neill,... Joaquín Maria Domínguez lui consacre une notice (p. 1058) qui précise quelques points. Il entre dans la Compagnie de Jésus en 1947. Il mène ses études de philosophie à Barcelone de 1952 à 1955 et suit des cours de psychothérapie. Il est ordonné prêtre en 1961.
Il exerce d’abord son ministère dans l’état de Maharasthra, à Nahsik, Shirpur et Manmad. Il est ensuite chargé de la formation des novices jésuites à Bombay en 1968 puis crée en 1972 un institut de formation pastorale qui s’installe à Lonavla en 1978.
Polyglotte, doté du sens de l’humour et de manières peu conventionnelles, il publie plusieurs livres qui connaissent le succès. Après sa mort, la Congrégation pour la Propagation de la Foi (Vatican), le 24 juin 1998, relève des ambiguïtés doctrinales dans ses derniers livres.
