Vous trouverez, en matière d'histoire des formats de la presse, des informations dans l'ouvrage de Gilles Feyel : la Presse en France des origines à 1944, Histoire politique et matérielle, Ellipses, 1999. Vous trouverez cet ouvrage en usuel à la Bibliothèque de la Part-Dieu, Département société sous la cote : 079.44 FEY
"Deux journalismes s’opposent : le journalisme de récit des gazettes et le journalisme de commentaire des « journaux ».
- Le format léger des gazettes, facilement transportable par la poste, imprimé sur une demi-feuille de papier, offre 4 pages de lecture (in-4°, deux colonnes, 210 x 270 mm) avec des suppléments éventuels ou réguliers.
- Le format plus lourd des journaux, imprimé sur 5 à 10 feuilles de papier, soit 12
à 240 pages in-12 (105 x 180 mm) est proche du livre. Jusqu’à la réforme des tarifs postaux, ces journaux utilisent d’ailleurs les circuits de diffusion du livre [...]
L’in-folio de 4 pages grand format (209 x 490 mm), imprmé sur 3 colonnes, sur une pleine feuille de papier, emprunté à la presse anglaise où il s’est généralisé depuis 1750, est introduit en France en 1789. (Journaux d’information politique et générale)
Les deux autres formats sont hérités des traditions de la presse d’information française : l’in-4° de 4 pages, imprimé en 2 colonnes, sur une demi-feuille de papier (210 x 270 mm) (Journaux d’information politique et générale)

Au cours de l’année 1799, quelques journaux parisiens et départementaux adoptèrent un format intermédiaire de 16,1 dm2 (230 x 350 mm) qui permettait d’accroître le contenu du journal avec notamment l’insertion d’un feuilleton littéraire ou commercial en haut ou en bas de page [...]
Les journaux se transformèrent sous l’effet de l’introduction de la publicité et de l’industrialisation de l’imprimerie. Jusqu’en 1827, le format grand in-4° ou petit in-folio, né en 1799 pour répondre à l’instauration du timbre, règne en maître. A partir de 1828, l’augmentation brutale de la taxe postale force les journaux à agrandir leur format qui passe à 330 x 450 mm, 3 colonnes, 4 pages, pour insérer la publicité qui viendra payer en partie ce supplément de dépenses. A la suite des initiatives d’Emile de Girardin, créateur de la presse à bon marché, et grâce à la mécanisation des imprimeries, le journal passe à 400 x 560 mmm, 4 colonnes, 4 pages en 1837, puis à 430 x 600 mm, 5 colonnes, 4 pages en 1845. Par la suite le journal gardera ce grand format standard jusque dans les années 1960-1970, période où vont se créer les tabloïdes ou demi-formats. Seules nouveautés les augmentations du colonnage et de la pagination.
La presse populaire vendue 5 centimes le numéro adopte d’abord le demi-format (300 x 400 mm, 4 colonnes, 4 pages) en 1863 avec le Petit Journal ; elle aussi agrandit progressivement son espace papier avec la diversification et l’enrichissement de son contenu : à partir de 1887, elle passe à 430 x 520 mm, 5 colonnes puis en 1890, elle prend la grand format standard des autres journaux.
